Starting Daylily Seeds

When you buy daylily seeds from Dillard Gardens they will have been chilled for a minimum of 2-3 weeks and are ready to plant. If you are planting outdoors in a cold climate we recommend that you wait until Spring. Store the daylily seeds in the crisper of your refrigerator until ready to plant. Do not freeze.

Soak daylily seeds for 2-3 days prior to planting. Some growers use 1 TBL peroxide in 1 QT of water and this could help prevent rot. We have included links to other articles on planting  daylily seeds.

As  daylily seeds sprout plant each seed 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep in a small pot using seedling mix. Some growers plant all seeds once a few sprout, others wait until each seed sprouts.  Soil MUST be kept moist but not soggy. Water from the bottom only. Rot is always a danger at this point and the use of a fungicide will help in preventing this problem. Keep pots in a bright sunny location but not in direct sunlight. As the plants reach a height of 2-3 inches fertilize with a liquid fertilizer at half strength weekly.

Once your daylily plants are 10” tall they are ready to transplant into the ground. Make sure the soil is 55 degrees or higher and that all danger of frost is past.  Acclimate the daylily plants to direct sunlight slowly over the course of a week or so. Each day expose them to more hours of sunlight. Daylilies need at least 6 hours of sunlight a day to flower.

Add organic material to your garden spot and plant your new daylilies. Mulch heavily, water once a week, feed with a general purpose or a timed release fertilizer like Osmocote.

As a general rule 50% of the daylily seeds will survive.  It will take 2-3 years before your daylilies flower for the first time and they will not bloom true that first year. We have daylily seedlings which were downright ugly at first bloom but by year three the blooms were beautiful. In any case your daylily blooms will be unique, one of a kind flowers which will give you pleasure for many years.
